The Kenyan football menu got richer following the launch of the Charity Cup by power company Kenya Power.

The competition will be played on February 2, 2013 at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, and has a total prize money of Sh800,000 for the winner.

It is an interactive competition that will see fans vote for their favourite teams to take part through Short Message Services (SMS). Fans will send the names of their favorite teams to the number 2542.

According to the tournament rules, the four teams with the highest number of votes will participate in the one-day tournament starting at the semi-final level.

All 16 teams from the just concluded 2012 season, including relegated sides Oserian and Rangers, ?and the top three teams from each of the two zones of Division One league are eligible to take part. Fans have until January 23 to cast their votes when they will be tallied to come up with the top four teams.

Speaking at Thursday’s launch, Kenya Power Managing Director, Joseph Njoroge, said funds raised from the competition will be channelled to various charities.

The function was also attended by FKF chairman Sam Nyamweya and Mathare United Chairman Bob Munro.

Meanwhile, Standard Media Group staff scooped top honours at the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) media awards on Tuesday night at a Nairobi Hotel.

Gilbert Wandera won the print journalist of the year award for the second year.

Top photographer Stafford Ondego was runner-up in photography category. Ondego has won the award for the last three years.

In the electronics side, KTN reporters Nick Mudimba emerged runner-up, while Hassan Juma was third.
