Gunmen attacked Iftin police post three kilometres from Garissa town on Monday evening but no casualties were reported.

The gunmen are said to have hurled a grenade into the police post thinking officers were inside.

They then fired at the building after the grenade exploded.

Police officers who were at the police post were not injured as they were outside the building.

North Eastern Provincial Police boss Phillip Tuimur said the officers were outside the building due to the hot weather.

He said the officers fired at the attackers and a shootout ensued but they fled into a nearby bush.

Tuimur said the attackers are suspected to be remnants of the Al Shabaab militant group.

The incident occurred a day after two Administration Police officers were shot dead in Garissa town.

On Sunday, unknown assailants planted an explosive device inside a church in Nairobi killing a nine-year-old boy and injured several others.

The attacks come days after Kenya Defence forces together with AMISOM and Somalia troops captured Al Shabaab stronghold Kismayu.
