An Egyptian court has sentenced 14 Islamist militants to death for attacks on the army and police in the Sinai Peninsula last year, officials say.

The court in Ismailia sentenced another four militants to life imprisonment. All the men are members of the Tawheed and Jihad group.

Reports say that eight of the 14 death sentences were in absentia.

At least one policeman, a soldier and a civilian were killed in the attacks in al-Arish last summer.
