Boarding primary and secondary schools in Nyanza sent learners home as teachers continued with their strike.
A survey by The Standard found that teachers in some local secondary schools in Rongo, Awendo and Uriri continued sneaking into classrooms to help Form Four students who were on self-guided lessons in preparation for national examinations.
As the strike entered its fourth day yesterday, some students went on with their studies without teachers.
Yesterday, students from Ulana Girls, Kanyawanga Boys, St Pius Uriri and Kangeso secondary schools were sent home, barely two days after reporting for their third term.
Learners at both St Joseph’s Rapogi Primary and Secondary schools had reported on Monday, but were sent home after Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) and Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet) officials went around schools that were not obeying the strike orders.
Rongo Knut sub-branch secretary general Owuor Gari said all teachers who were holding students in schools would be forced to send them home.
A spot check in schools within Nyatike, Kuria and Migori town revealed that all primary schools stayed shut.
Speaking yesterday, Knut Migori branch chairman Charles Katege and his Kuppet counterpart Kennedy Makasembo said the teachers would not relent until the Government honours its promises to them.
Elsewhere in Kisii County, students were sent back home. At Sameta Boys and Bishop Mugendi Nyakegogi schools in Sameta District, no learning took place on Thursday as students stayed in schools unattended.
Similar scenes were witnessed at Kisii and Nyabururu.
