Learning in public schools countrywide was disrupted as teachers’ strike entered the second day and a section of parents withdrew pupils.
In selected schools pupils whiled away time reading on their own as Kenya Certificate of Primary Education candidates revised their work without the help of teachers.
Teachers stayed away from classrooms and waited for orders from their union leaders on the next course of action.
The teachers are demanding a 300 percent pay rise negotiated in 1997 but has never been implemented.
Teachers Service Commission has moved to court seeking prayers that the Industrial Court upholds an earlier High court decision by Justice Mary Ang’awa, which declared the strike illegal.
The case is before Justice Maureen Onyango who is set to decide Tuesday afternoon.
Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers is expected to reply to the submissions.
TSC lawyer Allan Sitima said they were unable to serve Knut with court orders outlawing the strike.
