GATHONI TRACY MUNENE, 22, is an IT specialist who believes the earliest bird catches the juiciest worm. She spoke to SHIRLEY GENGA

What do you do for a living?

I am a help desk administration officer at XRX Technologies, an information and communication technology specialist that offers smart solutions to technological challenges to individuals and organisations.

What was your childhood dream?

I wanted to be a lawyer — criminal lawyer to be precise — then life happened and I ended up in information technology.

Where did you go to college and what did you study?

I studied at KCA University, Ruaraka. I joined the university in May 2008 and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Information Technology in December last year.

I have, however, gone back to school to do some certifications and hopefully complete my Masters programme by next year.

Why did you decide to do a Masters so soon?

There is no important time like the present. It is easier to do it now when I am younger and can easily manage my time.

What area of IT did you specialise in?

I chose to specialise in data communication because I am interested in networking and to do that, it is important to know how to handle data over network. Many companies do not know how to handle data. Data management is the future and it is an area I would like to venture into.

Do you think it is important to go to school to do what you do?

Yes; you cannot rely on talent and passion alone. Education teaches basic skills in a structured manner, which is important. Going to school also provides an opportunity to build basic social skills necessary for interaction. Most importantly, education gives one a head start in getting gainful employment since all employers will require some form of education. Lastly, it also helps build a social network that can, in future, be developed to great advantage. Any level of education is better than none.

Is this your first job?

Not really. In January to March last year, I worked as an intern at the ICT unit of the Ministry of Public Works. Then I joined XRX Technologies in July and worked as an intern until October when I became a help desk officer.

What do you love about what you do?

I get to meet clients’ needs. Nothing gives me more satisfaction than knowing I was able to assist a client solve a problem.

What are the challenges of your work?

Customer management is not easy. One is required to maintain emotional control even when under stress. You have to maintain a positive attitude at all times and constantly remind yourself that the client is always right and that you are not perfect either. You need to think on your feet and find a way to calm the customer and to provide a solution that works for both sides. One that meets customer needs and adheres to company regulations.

How do you balance your job and schooling?

Time management is every schooling profession’s best friend. When I decided to go back to school, I had to come up with a plan, which put both work and education as my most important things. I also learnt the importance of exercise in replenishing energy and relieving stress.

What advice would you give someone who wants to do what you do?

The IT field is fast moving and changing. Nothing comes easy and ‘luck’ rarely works in this industry. You must keep reading and keep ahead in education and technology. The smartest, early bird catches the juiciest worm.

What do you do for fun?

I love poetry and swimming. I write, read, perform and listen to poetry. I enjoy swimming as it relaxes me and clears my mind.

I also love organising events such as parties and baby showers. Maybe this hobby will grow into a business some day.

What are your future plans?

I do not want to spill any beans or jinx anything, but five years from now, you and I should probably sit down again and talk about life, school, work and much more. ?I hope to have gained experience in education and in life. I hope to be ‘in-charge’ somewhere.
