Four people have been confirmed dead after consuming illicit brew in Mbeere South District in Embu County.

Mbeere OCPD Eric Mugambi said seven people aged between 25 and 50 are admitted at the Embu Provincial General Hospital after consuming the brew at Muraru village in Gachoka division.

Mugambi said one of the victims aged 60 complained of stomach pains on Monday evening and died soon after.

Ten people were admitted at the hospital but three died on Tuesday evening.

Police were sent to the village to monitor the situation amid fears that there were more victims in the village.

Mugambi said that owner of the bar took the victims to the hospital after they developed complications and he is in custody assisting police with investigations into the incident.

One of the victims, Johnson Muriithi who is admitted at the hospital, said they went drinking with a friend.

Muriithi said he started feeling dizzy after the first drink and by the time he was through with the second class, he had lost sight.

He said other revelers also complained and they were rushed to a local dispensary and were later transferred to the Embu Provincial General Hospital.

Mbeere South District Officer One John Kirui said the administration has sent the chiefs and the Kiritiri officer commanding station (OCS) to the village to ascertain the situation on the ground.
