A magistrate’s court has adjourned the hearing of a corruption case against Eldoret South MP Peris Simam until next week.
The case was pushed to Tuesday to allow the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Court handle it. Simam is charged alongside five others.
Eldoret Principal Magistrate Francis Kyambia directed the matter be placed before the trial magistrate of anti-corruption court. The MP and her co-accused were present in court yesterday. They are charged with conspiracy to commit an offence of economic nature contrary to section 47A(3) of the Anti-corruption and Economic Crime Act No 3 of 2003. The charges say the offence was committed between January 6 and April 1, 2010 in Eldoret.
The accused allegedly conspired to commit an offence of influencing the award of contract No UG/2-27-09/10-003 for the routine maintenance and spot improvement of Bayete-Chuiyat-Bargeiywa Road in Eldoret South constituency.
The contract was awarded to Kachur Holdings Ltd, a firm that did not qualify. The accused have denied the charges. Simam’s lawyer Michael Chemwok said they had not been supplied with credible statements to prepare their defence.
