The High Court in Nakuru has fined an 89-year-old man one female camel after he pleaded guilty to manslaughter.
Justice Enyara Emukule ordered Leraas Lenchura, a World War II veteran, to pay the camel to the family of the late Lotiyan Lekapana.
He had been charged with killing Lekapana on February 12, last year, at Lereta ‘A’ village in Samburu East.
Following a plea-bargain agreement with the State, the charges were reduced to manslaughter and all other charges dropped.
The court heard that on the fateful day the deceased had gone to fetch water at a community borehole at Lereta shopping centre.
Lekapana found a long queue at the borehole where he asked to be allowed to draw water first.
As he approached the water point he met Lenchura and a fight ensued over who should draw water first. Lenchura stabbed him and he died due to severe bleeding.
Timothy Njogu, Lenchura’s lawyer, asked the court for leniency noting that the accused was remorseful.
