Former President Daniel Moi has denied press reports that he had a political deal with Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
In a statement dispatched to newsrooms on Monday, Moi said the claims were baseless and a misrepresentation of facts by the media.
“Raila was in Kabarak on Sunday for spiritual nourishment and not for any political engagement or talks,” Moi said in a statement.
Through his Press Secretary, Mr Lee Njiru, the former President said newspapers and other media channels should not misrepresent the church service by portraying it as if it was political.
Njiru said that Raila, who was on a political tour of the region, decided to worship at the chapel where he found the former President already seated and the church service going on.
“After the service, Moi told Raila not to inject politics in the minds of students when he was given a chance to greet them,” read part of the statement. Raila complied with the request from the former President and steered clear of politics in his brief speech.
“When the service came to an end, Moi and the PM parted ways at the venue. There were no talks whatsoever of political alliances of any kind,” the statement read.
A section of the media (not The Standard) claimed on Monday that Moi and Raila were out to craft a political alliance ahead of the next General Election.
“Because we were around here, we decided to join you for the church service so that we can worship together,” Raila told the congregation when he was invited by Moi to greet the students.
The PM was on his way to Eldama Ravine where he addressed a rally as he concluded a tour of Baringo County having on Saturday addressed another rally at Afraha Stadium, Nakuru.
