Windsor’s professional Riz Charania emerged the overall winner of the fifth leg of the 2012 KCB Advantage Corporate Banking that ended at the par 73 Nakuru golf club course on Saturday.

Charania who is the Chairman of Professional Golfers of Kenya managed to hit three under par for a round total of 216 gross to claim the victory, a second one in the series after winning the Muthaiga leg.

The win has secured him the leg’s first place as the KCB Golf tour takes its final bend to the grand finale to be held at Nyali golf club in Mombasa in August.

In both rounds during the final day, Charania sank birdies on the third, seventh, thirteenth, fourteenth and seventeenth holes and dropped mixed bogey shots on the rest of the holes to put him ahead of the 28 professionals in the tournament.

Muthaiga’s Nicholas Rokoine was a close second hitting a two under par 217 (74,69,74), ahead of Nakuru’s left handed Richard Ainley who had a-74, 72,72 for a round total 218 gross.

Golf gala

Elsewhere, home player Kapoor Rajput posted the gala best score of 46 points but it was all in vain as it was not enough to help his team win the Dasani Golf Gala during the fourth qualification round at Windsor Golf and Country Club.

Prior to the Windsor event, the highest score record of 40 points was held by Edwin Kiarie during the second qualifier at Thika Sports Club.

The tournament was, however won by the team of Paresh Shah, CV Shah, Nishit Haria and Dr Gohil on a score of 122 points during the event last Saturday.

Paresh playing off handicap 17 had 41 points, same as handicap 14 Gohil while handicap 16 CV Shah had 40 points and Haria playing off handicap 15 managed 38.

Playing off handicap 19, the highest gala scorer Rajput anchored his side to second spot with a total of 122 points, only losing to the eventual winners on count back.

He dropped a shot on the first hole, a par four, but recovered with level on par four second hole before sinking a birdie on the par five third hole.

He dropped a shot on the par three fourth hole, had back-to-back pars on the par five fifth and par four sixth holes.

Double bogey

Rajput tumbled on the par four seventh hole with a double bogey, before leveling the eighth and ninth for a first nine score of 22.

In the second nine he started poorly with a double bogey on the par four 10th hole.

However, he leveled pars on the 11th, 12th and 13th, before dropping shots on the 14th and 15th then leveled the remaining three holes for a score of 24.

The second team was made up of Rajput (46), handicap 13 Nashir Abdullah (40pts), handicap 19 Ali Merali (36pts) and handicap 18 N Kassam who contributed 31 points.

The top two teams booked a ticket to the Gala’s grand finale that will be staged at Karen in September.

The reserve team was made up of Jawad Jaffer (38 points), L Khan (38 points), H Khan (36 points) and S Walji (27 points), who amassed a total of 112 points.
