Most people want to grow in their careers and get to the next level. However, their beliefs often hold them back, leading to stagnation.

When you stick in one place for long, frustrations begin setting in. You lose focus, and in the end, it becomes difficult to realise your career objectives.

But its worth remembering that successful people never give up and will instead keep fighting until they realise their ultimate goals.

But how can belief affect your working life? The best explanation involves your motivation. When you believe and enjoy what you are doing, productivity improves. And because productivity is crucial for your career growth, everyone must undertake those activities that they believe will be beneficial to them.

So what beliefs might be holding you back from progressing in your career?  According to Jackson Kagia, a career counselor and consultant, the unfounded fear that some tasks and responsibilities are only meant for some people is an impediment to progress.

“Never entertain the belief that rising up the career ladder is only meant for some people. This is untrue. Anybody can climb the career ladder to the top,” he says.

“This belief pulls back many people as they feel they are not equal to some new challenges. However, there are many things you can do with the right focus and purpose of mind,” Kagia says.

Some people believe that somebody out there is watching their every move and they fear what they will say if they take up new challenges.

“This is an unfortunate belief because few people care what you are doing and when you concentrate on it, it can stand on your way towards achieving your career goals and success. Take the plunge and make the first step without looking back,” advises Kagia.

“Lack of adequate experience, qualifications, skills and abilities can also hold you back,” cautions Kagia.

“Age should never stand on your way towards career progression. How old or young you are cannot determine your performance at work as research has shown. What matters is how you package yourself,” observes Kagia

However, career counselors and experts say that it is possible to reverse those beliefs that hold you back from achieving your career greatness. This can be achieved by eliminating all hurdles that will prevent you from succeeding.
