Workers at the Town Council of Nyamache have gone on strike demanding the transfer of chief officers over alleged mismanagement of their pension scheme.

They locked up offices of the town clerk and the treasurer on Tuesday morning claiming their contributions amounting to Sh1.7 million had not been remitted to their pension fund.

Through their union representative Casper Makori, the workers claimed their contributions to the Local Authority Pension Fund and Local Authorities Pension Trust had not been remitted since October 2010.

“We demand the immediate transfer of these officers for transparency and accountability,” said Makori.

Efforts by Robert Momanyi, the council chairman, to convince the workers to return to work failed.

Town Clerk Richard Odunga conceded the council had not remitted the deductions due to a huge wage bill occasioned by the employment of more workers and promotions of others.

He said the council faced a challenge of plugging a Sh10 million deficit in the current budget of Sh31 million and the wage bill stands at 90 per cent of total revenue.
