Palaver

Mr Obama, if you thought sending Mr Bush home was enough, then think again. Or bussing home a couple of war-weary American GIs would placate a restless public? Wrong again. Or did you hope that merely dispatching Osama Bin Laden to the hereafter would see you through? Dead wrong mister. Palaver won’t ask you to send a couple of soldiers to Damascus since they are already preoccupied in Afghanistan, Congo forest or resting after the ear-shattering battery of Libya. But surely cough, grunt, hiss or just say something loud enough to stop Bashar Al Assad slaughtering toddlers and blaming it on bumbling foreigners.

It’s a tragedy...a rip-off, and if left unattended, will likely be repeated to the detriment of several thousand pockets. Can police quickly hold an identification parade so that Kenyans can know the real names of the 12 foreigners who sleepwalked up and down Kasarani stadium on Saturday complete with the national team Harambee Stars’ kit? Not even the Tinga’s legendary chenga chenga exploits or even Walking-Talking ATM Mike Sonko’s threat to hose the players down with real hard cash made a difference. Can’t we invest in something else? Even in Jersey Island!

Bed-ridden and disgraced former Egypt president Hosni Mubarak and his former Interior minister Habib al-Adli did not wait long to follow former Liberian Prezzo Charles Taylor into permanent retirement. After Taylor’s 50-year shocker, the Egyptian duo was sentenced on conviction of failing to stop the killing of protesters during the 2011 revolt that turned the former Head of State  into a mere defendant in a courtroom dock. After the verdict was read, Mubarak was whisked away on a helicopter to Tora Prison hospital in Cairo. We hope that in between giving orders to fire into crowds, the duo had time to do a Moody Awori-style makeover of prison facilities!

And finally…

“My grandfather once told me that there were two kinds of people; those who work and those who take the credit. He told me to try to be in the first group. There is much less competition.” So said Indira Gandhi who served as Indian Prime Minister for four terms (1966–1977 and 1980–84). She also remains the world’s second longest serving female Prime Minister.
