Travel can be a challenge in several ways. Eating while maintaining hygiene is key in avoiding stomach surprises.

When travelling, this should be a top priority. You should not have to forget about good grooming just because you are travelling or that you overlook self-cleanliness. In fact, you should always be mindful of hygiene since you are not familiar with the place you are visiting.

Here are a few tips that will help you keep healthy and hygienic as you enjoy your travel.

Plan Ahead

It’s advisable to pack food to avoid stomach upsets, especially if you have a sensitive stomach. Most people tend to get comfortable with hotel and restaurant foods but don’t take chances. Try carrying packed dry foods that your body system is used to. Planning here helps you to calculate how much you will need to carry, or even the alternative that will supplement the food you will take.

Be Cautious of Food Preparation Methods

It’s always important to understand the method the food has been prepared before taking it. You might be allergic to spicy food, over-fried or even under-cooked food. Take this into account before eating. It’s also advisable to avoid sugary food and snacks. The combination of decreased hygiene; fatigue and sugar could bring on anything that could make your journey really uncomfortable.

The short-term effects of spicy foods can be unpleasant so it is important to check out the options before trying hem out.

Observe cleanliness

While travelling people tend to ignore hygiene. Basic hygiene like washing hands before handling food is important. You can carry disposable wipes and ensure that you use them. Vehicles are simply not that hygienic and one should always be concerned about keeping their hands clean. Always dust the fingertips using your wipes before picking up finger foods. If you are on a trip with your children, it is a good idea to prepare a nail clipper in case their finger or toenails get dirty.

Another area that we tend to ignore is the handling of cutlery. No matter how much you trust the cutlery of the place you eat out, be hygienic. Clean them preferably with hot water before using them.

Water

When on a bus, always have plenty of water. Traveling tends to dehydrate, and dehydration leaves you much more vulnerable to pathogens, primarily those that attack the nose, throat and lungs. Small, frequent sips provide your body with the best chance to absorb fluids. Drink a lot of clean, preferably bottled water while out there. Avoid tap water. If you do not trust the water, boil it or buy a bottled one from a trusted source. This way, you are guaranteed of clean drinking supply every time you feel thirsty.

Main meals

While travelling it’s easy to opt for a quick fast food joint than to take the time for a sit-down meal. In a proper restaurant the menu will give you many more healthy choices and, you’re much less likely to feel sick in your stomach, if you choose the healthy meal over a greasy, fat-filled selection.

Anti-acids and Antibiotics

The most common illnesses travellers experience are colds and diarrhoea caused by exposure to unfamiliar bacteria and viruses. Anti acids and antibiotics always come in very handy when  least expected. It never hurts to have them just in case. Also carry some painkillers and a first aid kit when you are on the move.
