There was a heated exchange in Parliament yesterday after MPs probing Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) over the award of a multi-million dollar contract to a nondescript Norwegian company clashed during a committee meeting.
Tempers flared during the meeting that was attended by three top officials of the Green Energy Group that was contracted to supply wellhead generators to KenGen.
Wajir West MP Adan Keynan and his Cherangany counterpart Joshua Kutuny exchanged bitter words, as company officials who included the company’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr Terje Laugerud, watched.
Other members of the committee present were MPs Maina Kamau, Cyprian Omollo, Edwin Yinda, Aden Duale and committee chairman James Rege.
The committee had summoned Laugerud and his Chief Financial Officer Peter Harris to shed light on the deals with KenGen.
Hell broke loose when Kutuny, a member of the committee, attempted to answer a question that had been directed to the company officials by Keynan.
“The fact is that KenGen did not follow rules of public procurement as stipulated in law. As much as some of us would like defend the deal, there are still questions that need to be answered,” Duale retorted.
But Kutuny interrupted Duale saying that whatever questions they had on the procurement process were addressed in an initial committee report. Earlier, Mr Laugerud denied before the committee that they had any links with wheeler-dealer and key player in the infamous Anglo Leasing scandal, Mr Deepak Kamani.
