Gor Mahia were guilty of losing numerous scoring opportunities in the first half and have themselves to blame after Western Stima held on for a barren draw in a midweek clash at Nyayo National Stadium.
Gor Mahia dominated the first half, but had nothing to write home about. Christopher Wekesa playing a in an offensive role on the left flank missed to put Gor ahead after 15 minutes when he was unmarked inside the Stima defence.
Then Kevin Ochieng watched in disbelief as his free kick was palmed over the bar by Ben Roberts Mandela. Not even dangerous man Rama Salim could turn around the fortunes as he shot wide in front of the goal.
Veteran striker Moses Odhiambo ended the first half for Gor on a positive note with a brilliant freekick, which however went wide.
Stima’s only chance of the first half fell to veteran Mark Sirengo, who should have beaten Jerim Onyango in goal in injury time, but his point blank effort was put out by the goalkeeper.
Gor started the second half just like they finished the first winning a corner immediately after the recess. Then it was time for the Gor technical bench to reinforce the squad. In came Ali Abondo for Kevin Ochieng and Kevin Omondi for George Midenyo.
The attacking continued and Abondo was denied a clear chance by the Stima goalkeeper who appeared to have been beaten on the hour mark. Stima’s Aloise Mangi was unlucky not to score five minutes later with Christopher Wekesa putting out his shot after he had rounded up the Gor Mahia goalkeeper.
Then it was Rama Salim who saw his freekick put out by the Western Stima goalkeeper as Gor continued to dominate proceedings of the match. The match ended 0-0.
Despite, it being a midweek clash, thousands of Gor Mahia supporters turned up to cheer the team encouraged by the results of their recent matches.
