Residents of Kipsitet Market in Muhoroni have claimed the self-confessed serial killer, George Okoth Otieno, had an interest in devil worship.
And his family is now living in fear after the public attempted to evict them from the market centre.
A resident who did want to be named told The Standard Otieno had approached him wanting to know where he could find devil worshippers.
However, the motive of the inquiry has not been established.
In another incident, Otieno is said to have wanted to offer assistance to a man who lost his motorcycle in the market.
"George offered to take the man who lost his motorcycle to Kisumu where they were to see a witchdoctor," the source said.
And as Otieno’s mother, Josephine Achieng, made frantic efforts to trace her son, police are yet to disclose his whereabouts.
She told The Standard: "I want to meet my son and know from him if indeed he is behind the series of murders he is claimed to have committed and if the answer is yes, establish why he did so."
On Tuesday, officers from the Criminal Investigations Department in Kisumu interrogated Achieng.
She gave her son’s nickname as Arafat and when they called at Keroka Police, they confirmed the suspect held had the same nickname.
"The other detail is about Rarieda, my birthplace. The police have confirmed that the suspect held has a similar detail," she added.
Police sources indicate residents do not want to be associated with the actions of the man and thus want the family kicked out.
But police have warned them against taking the law into their hands, arguing the family should not be made to suffer for a crime committed by an individual.
The suspect told police he belonged to a religious cult involved in killing for human hair. He confessed to killing seven people including his latest victim in Keroka Town.
