The Safaricom foundation Wednesday unveiled a Sh13.2 million sponsorship to Kenya Rugby Union Chairman Richard Omwela at the RFUEA grounds.

The money is expected to go towards rehabilitation of the Kenya Rugby Union grounds which will mostly involve the construction of additional seating space that will cater for 1,500 additional fans. In turn the KRU is expected to invest 10 per cent from the gate proceedings of the Safaricom Sevens and an equal amount on advertising rugby programmes across the country.

Africa’s premier rugby tournament the Safaricom Sevens kicks off on June 4 and it’s fans, who are expected to pay Sh1,000 per day, will be the first beneficiaries of the new stands. According to Omwela, this is only the first phase of an ambitious plan to make the venue a formidable rugby fortress in the region.
