Fish packaging: With ban on plastics, crisis looms

Traders prepare fish for sale at Karagita landing beach in Lake Naivasha after the three day fishing ban was lifted by the sub-county government. The ban was meant to give way for a major clean-up exercise targeting abandoned nets in the water body. Pix By Antony Gitonga

Fishermen are staring at a crisis as the ban on plastic bags approaches. They said they have no way of packaging fish other than in plastic bags.

They have requested a meeting with the Department of Public Health and the National Environment Management Authority to discuss the next course of action just a month before the ban becomes effective.

"Banning plastics is a big blow to us," said the Lake Naivasha Fishermen Association chairman, David Kilo.
