Plot to kill Prince Charles foiled as police seize bombs and guns ahead of royal visit

Police last night foiled a plot to kill Prince Charles and Camilla.

Cops in the Irish Republic seized bombs and guns just miles from where the royal couple are due to visit on May 19.

Six people were arrested in a nationwide crackdown, including two in the Glenfarne area of Leitrim.

This is less than an hour away from Mullaghmore, where Charles will pay his respects to his great uncle Lord Mountbatten, who was killed there in 1979.

The two men in their 20s were found with the improvised explosives and a handgun in their possession.

More improvised bombs as well as handguns were discovered in Louth, Wexford and Dublin as police swooped on 20 different locations across the country.

The six men, who are all aged between 21 and 62, were being held in different garda stations across the country.

It is understood all six men have close links to both the Continuity and Real IRA.

A source told the Irish Mirror how all potential targets had been monitored for the past number of weeks.

The source said: "Gardai have been monitoring a number of people over the past few months.

"Ever since it was announced that the British would be coming over, there has been an increase in security.

"Nothing is being left to chance.

"There were two improvised viable devices in the car as well as a handgun.

"A similar thing can be said for Wexford.

"The bomb squad were down there dealing with something similar."

Gardai confirmed that two men had been arrested.

A spokesman said: "Two males in their 20s were arrested at the scene and are currently detained under the provisions of Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act at Manorhamilton Garda Station," said a Garda spokesman about the Leitrim incident.
