Kenya: The Government has been urged to overhaul the Immigration department.

Emurua Dikir MP Jonah Ng’eno said the Immigration department is ‘rotten’ and it must be overhauled to rid it of crooked personnel who assist terrorists to enter the country and attain citizenship illegally.

“That department should be cleaned up because currently, it is even easier for aliens to get citizenship compared to Kenyans themselves,” said Ngeno.

The Government is currently conducting a massive security operation that has seen thousands of Somali Muslims arrested and illegal immigrants deported.

Terror attacks

Speaking to the Press in Kericho town, the legislator also faulted the Government for not doing enough to prevent terror attacks.

“The Government should invest in investigative mechanisms that will allow it to stop terrorists and other criminal elements before they can strike,” said Ngeno.

Meanwhile, Council of Governors Chairman Isaac Ruto has warned against a creation of a rift between members of he Muslim community and the rest of Kenya through the ongoing security operation.

Drive a wedge

The Bomet governor said the country’s Muslims are law abiding citizens and the Government should ensure it doesn’t drive a wedge between them and other Kenyans.

He, however, pointed out that criminals should not hide behind any religion to kill and maim innocent citizens.

“We want to coexist with our Muslim brothers and sisters,” Ruto, who was speaking during a church funds drive in Kibyemit village in Kericho County, said.
