Nyahururu, Kenya: One of the students who were shot dead by police during riots at Laikipia University on Sunday was not from the institution, it has been established.

The deceased was a third year student at Chuka University in Meru but had come to visit a girlfriend at the institution.

According to the vice chancellor Francis Lelo, his documents indicated that he was from the Meru institution and that was when the management called the institution.

“It has been confirmed that he is not from our school but had come for a weekend visit here. We are still investigating how he joined the demonstrations,” he noted.

“The circumstances under which he led other in hurling stones at the police have remained a mystery since he was new here.”

The Bachelor of Education students was among a group of students who engaged police in confrontation during a protest at the institution.

The students were demonstrating after one of their own was hit and killed by a speeding vehicle along Nyahururu-Nakuru road.

It is during the demonstrations that a stray bullet hit him on the neck and he died on the spot.

A senior police officer also sustained serious injuries during the riots.

The school has since been closed indefinitely.
