Unilever injects Sh5 million to grow rugby talent

Nairobi,Kenya:The great need to develop feeders for the national 7s and 15s teams has driven Unilever Kenya to inject Sh5 million in the Community Rugby Association (CRA).

The kitty is meant to develop the game by training young players from the under privileged backgrounds.

CRA, which is supported by Rugby Patron Society of Kenya (RPSK), will use the cash to facilitate training, transports and kit the teams made up children from under 9-19 years.

Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) chairman Mwangi Muthee noted yesterday that professionals and rugby pundits will be used to train the children who he said will act as feeders to the national 7s and 15s teams.

“KRU is glad that Unilever has come out to strengthen this league,” said Muthee yesterday.

Managing Director, Unilever East Africa and Southern Africa, Yaw Nsarko said: “Unilever through the Omo Extra Fresh variant seeks to empower the youth and underprivileged children to pursue the sport.

We are fully convinced that the time is ripe for growing and nurturing talent from an early age.”

RPSK vice chairman Gordon Weston noted that there is need to grow rugby talent in Kenya.

 “We salute Unilever for giving children a  chance to support to be trained and showcase their talent and welcome other companies to support similar initiatives towards growing rugby from the grassroots,” said Weston.

Community rugby is a league of five clubs namely Runda, Arise, Ngong, BulBul and Matasia (each club consist of eight boys and girls teams) played every last Sunday of the month.

The league began in 2009 in the Githogoro slums near Runda Estate in Nairobi with an aim of encouraging young players to take up and be passionate about the game of rugby.The sponsorship is expected to benefit 600 children.
