Six people died when the matatu they were travelling in was involved in an accident along the Nakuru-Eldoret Highway.

The accident occurred at Kiptenden, 14km from Nakuru town after a trailer hit the matatu.

The Sunday morning accident left four passengers in the Nakuru-bound North Rift shuttle in critical condition.

The driver and turn-boy of the trailer are said to have immediately fled from the scene.

Five victims died on the spot while another succumbed to injuries while he was being taken to hospital.

Good Samaritans took survivors to Nakuru Provincial General Hospital.

Witnesses said the trailer hit the right side of the matatu.

According to a witness, Mr Vincent Kipchirchir, the trailer carrying bags lost control after one of its tyres burst.

Kipchirchir, who was the first to arrive at the scene, said he saw the driver and turn-boy of the trailer alight from the truck and flee.

"They did not show any signs of injury," he said.
