Cleric distances Miji Kenda from MRC demands

BY LINAH BENYAWA

A Muslim cleric has said secessionist demands by the Mombasa Republican Council ( MRC) do not serve the interests of Miji Kenda.

Sheikh Juma Ngao, the chairman of the Kenya Muslim National Advisory Council, claimed in Mombasa yesterday that the National Intelligence Service and other security agents were harassing MRC.

According to Ngao, the Government should listen to MRC grievances. But he also said ethnic Miji Kenda will not accept returning the coastal strip to the control of the defunct Zanzibari sultanate.

Ngao asked the group to withdraw their secessionist stance, urging them to vote for leaders who would solve the historical injustices.

MRC has genuine issues, quite a number of people are unemployed, issues of land grabbing need to be addressed, but solutions will only come through the right leaders,” he added.
