Four people among them three Moi University School of Law students died in a grisly accident along Eldoret-Nakuru highway.

One student survived the Thursday morning crash that involved a Toyota Vitz and a truck ferrying sand and is being treated at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH).

Those who died in the accident that occurred at Sugunanga area in Uasin Gishu County were three female students and the driver of a taxi they had hired from Eldoret town.

Three people died on the spot while the fourth succumbed to injuries while being rushed to hospital.

The bodies of the four were taken to MTRH mortuary.

The students, all fourth years are said to have hired a taxi from Eldoret town to ferry them to their hostels at the University’s school of law at Annex.

They had reportedly spent the night watching Champions League football fixtures in one of the nightclubs in the town.

“The taxi driver was attempting to overtake when he realized there was an oncoming vehicle from the opposite direction,” said Abdurrahman Ali a witness.

He added that the driver swerved back to his lane when he failed to overtake leading to his car ramming into the rear of the truck ahead of them.

Uasin Gishu OCPD Erastus Muthamia confirmed the incident and called on drivers to be careful when overtaking.

A sombre mood engulfed the University’s school of law when news of the accident spread.
