Prisons women volleyball team will use the tournament in Mombasa to polish its skills and try out new tactics ahead of the World Club Championships in Doha, Qatar, next month.
Head coach David Lung’aho said he is keen to analyse his team’s performance at the Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) National League and Aphia Plus Coast tournament and rate each player ability.
Lung’aho said: “The tour of Mombasa will definitely offer us the best training opportunity as we finalise our preparation for the World Clubs Championships in Doha.
“The presence of Kenya Pipeline, Ulinzi and Kenya Commercial Bank in Mombasa is recipe for competitive matches, which my players require to test their preparedness for World Championships.”
League matches will be played today and then pave way for the Aphia Plus Coast tournament tomorrow and Sunday at Shanzu Teachers Training College.
Prisons, the reigning national champions, are drawn against Ulinzi in one of the starting fixtures of the day.
Lung’aho is expected to parade experienced line-up that is likely to feature Captain Diana Khisa, Bracksides Agala, Jane Wacu, Mercy Moim and Lydia Maiyo.
Ulinzi team manager Alfred Ruto Chedotum indicated that they will not be scared by Prisons’ experienced players saying the military side too has great names and potential in its ranks.
“The return of Doris Palang’a to the team is great news and I hope she will combine well with Edna Rotich to lock down Prisons,” said Chedotum.
Pipeline plays Stima Nyeri in their first match of the league, which the oil merchants start as favourites.
Debutants Talent Academy, who have of late become the team to beat, host KCB as Nairobi Water take on Blue Triangle in the other women’s league matches.
