DNA to attend court on copyright

Updated Friday, September 14th 2012 at 00:00 GMT +3

The Court case in which local artiste DNA is suing a leading bank for using material allegedly lifted from his club-banger Banjuka in their advertisement is set to go for hearing this coming Monday.

Through his lawyers, DNA instituted and filed last year asking for payment from the bank for infringement of his copyright and passing-off.

The artiste asserts that the campaign by the bank — for an account that targeted the youth — was based on, inspired by and borrowed from his hit single Banjuka. Even the title of the campaign is similar, they claim.

Just recently, another artiste purported to remix DNA’s latest song Maswali Ya Polisi and the artiste is contemplating legal action, having served the artiste with demand letters already.

Asked why he was being particularly aggressive, DNA pointed out that much as it would be easier to walk away as most other affected artistes do, he opted to take the matter on.

“Music is a career that can be profitable and should be respected”, he said during the phone interview, adding that he was fighting for the truth.
