Police have cancelled a Mombasa Republican Council rally in Kaloleni, Mombasa and cordoned off the venue. There is also heavy police presence at Kaloleni Public Grounds in Kilifi County where the banned MRC rally-cum-prayer meeting was to be held.

MRC official Richard Lewa is turning away members unaware of the cancellation.

Recently, the High Court lifted the ban on the MRC saying the move was unconstitutional.

A three judge bench sitting in Mombasa, however, warned MRC to stop agitating for secession saying such act was not enshrined in the constitution.

The judges stated in their ruling that their decision should not be seen as an endorsement for secession and added that the same could only be achieved by far reaching amendments to the Constitution.

The three judges, Justices John Mwera, Francis Tiuiyot and Mary Kasango advised the group to form a political party to front their agenda.

Members of MRC had moved to court to challenge a government notice that outlawed them.
