Two bodies recovered, 21 rescued after two boats collided in Lake Victoria

Homa Bay, Kenya: At least two people died after two boats collided near Remba Island in Lake Victoria, Homabay County.

The passenger boat was headed for Kiwa from Remba and had 23 passengers when the incident happened at about 2 am on Wednesday, police said.

It had ferried 200 passengers to Remba and was on its way back with 23 passengers. The fishing boat had four people and have all been accounted for.

So far, 21 of those who were in the passenger boat have been rescued.

“This means only two died in the accident and no one is missing”, police said.

Nyanza Regional Police Commander Willy Lugusa said they had recovered two bodies of children and that most of the victims were rescued by fishermen.

Most fishermen prefer to operate at night when water in the lake is calm.
