Sh10 million alcohol plant destroyed as officials strike Salgaa dens

An alcohol factory worth more than Sh10 million was destroyed in Salgaa following the presidential directive on second generation liquor.

During the exercise led by government officials at Ambaka Wineries Limited, it was discovered that the company's licence expired in December 2011.

More than 6,000 litres of molasses, 5,000 litres of kangara, 5,000 litres of muratina and 10,000 plastic containers were burnt.

Rongai Sub-county Commissioner David Koskey said attempts by public health officers to close the plant from which streams of waste flowed across the Salgaa market had been thwarted through court injunctions.

Some of the brands produced by the factory were 'Opaque Githuki Natural' and 'Iko Poa' . "We will establish how Kenya Bureau of Standards logos were obtained for these products," said Koskey.
