Taita Taveta MCAs vote to sack irrigation executive

Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) have unanimously passed a motion asking Governor John Mruttu to dismiss a member of his cabinet for alleged misuse of public funds.

Taita Taveta County Assembly adopted and approved a report by a select committee on the allegations raised against five county executive members. The report was tabled by committee vice chairman Rachael Marura.

It is not clear whether the motion, passed yesterday, is binding after two High Court rulings barred MCAs from impeaching county executives.

During a session chaired by Speaker Meshack Maghanga, the MCAs approved the resolution requiring the Water and Irrigation Executive Stephen Mring'a to be dismissed.

However, four other executives; Gifton Mkaya (Health), Flora Mtuweta (Community Affairs), Elijah Mwandoe (Energy) and Vincent Masawi (Finance) would be surcharged for illegally obtaining mileage allowances based on the rates awarded. Committee said the affected executive displayed arrogance.
