Siaya, Kenya - Governor Cornel Rasanga has taken on critics who have been calling for his impeachment, terming them bitter individuals who have nothing to offer residents.

Speaking at the county's open forum, where county executives met and engaged residents on issues of accountability, Mr Rasanga said his leadership had been welcomed by the people of Siaya.

"Impeachment threats will not cow me. I am in this office to serve the people who voted for me and those who did not. I have heard a few MPs criticise the work of my administration," said Rasanga.

"Locals know they (critics) are only peddling lies to hoodwink them. Mine is to serve Siaya people and I won't be distracted by their sideshows," he added.

Earlier at the same event, Siaya Township Ward Rep James Otare had claimed there was a group of MCAs being sponsored by Rasanga's critics to table an impeachment motion when the county assembly reconvenes next week.

"Let us meet on the floor of the House. Should they come with such a motion, which only aims to drag development projects, we will beat them," said Mr Otare.

The sentiments were dismissed by North Gem Ward Rep Jared Abayo, who said such loose talk was unfortunate and unconstitutional.

"Let me assure everyone that impeachment laws are very clear and if we have to do it, we will do it according to the law. The governor need not to worry if he is doing a good job," said Mr Abayo.

Nominated MCA Sella Okwako warned the warring factions that they could jeopardise development projects that were already picking up. She said elected leaders should avoid the push and pull, and instead thank God for devolution.

Gem MP Jakoyo Midiwo has been criticising Rasanga's leadership over misuse of public funds.
