CID officers to grill Narok senator, MPs over demo that left 2 people dead

NAIROBI: Police have summoned a number of Narok County leaders over Monday's chaos that left two people dead and several others wounded.

The leaders, among them Senator Stephen ole Ntutu, MPs Moitalel Kenta (Narok North), Korei Lemein (Narok South), Patrick Ntutu (Narok West) and Johanna Ngeno (Emmurua Dikkirr), were required at CID headquarters to answer questions on the chaos in the town.

Director of Criminal Investigations Ndegwa Muhoro said the leaders would be grilled over allegations of inciting violence.

"We have called them to come and answer several issues regarding the protest in which people died and were injured. Property was also destroyed. We expect them to be here anytime this week," said Mr Muhoro.

Other sources said a team had been formed at the CID headquarters to handle the MPs when they honoured the summons.

The leaders led a group of protesters who sought to present Governor Samuel Tunai with a petition detailing their grievances.

Narok North OCPD Paul Letting and a General Service Unit officer were among the injured.

About 500 police officers were detailed to restrain protestors numbering about 10,000 from accessing the county government offices.

Among other issues, the politicians have been engaged in running battles with Tunai, accusing him of protecting "non-Maasai interests in Narok".

He is accused of employing 'outsiders' in the county government and failing to address an alleged irregular 4,000-acre allocation in the Maasai Mara National Reserve.
