Nairobi, Kenya: Police are holding a British national in connection with the death of his diabetic girlfriend after he flushed her medicine into the toilet in their house in Gachie, Nairobi.

According to police, 41-year-old Carl Cary Singleton willingly destroyed the medical drugs of his fiancée where he held her hostage for two days after beating her.

British media said Singleton met 22-year-old Peris Ashley Agumbi Mumtah on Facebook.

Ms Agumbi was a student at the University of Nairobi at Lower Kabete Campus. Police said on Sunday they intend to introduce murder charges on the Briton.

The man was arrested last Sunday after Ms Agumbu had reported that Singleton had beaten her up and later flushed her medicine.

She later fell sick and was rushed to Agha Khan Hospital for emergency treatment and later transferred to Ladnan Hospital in Eastleigh where she died.

"She was diagnosed with diabetes, hypertension and respiratory failure," officials said.

Police say investigations show the victim went through the beating ordeal and had her drugs seized from her on November 19 and was rushed to hospital two days later when her health condition deteriorated.

Singleton has been in the country since May 23 when he arrived as a tourist.

Singleton appeared in court last Monday and was remanded in custody for seven days after police asked for time to file a murder charge on Monday.

According to Daily Mail, Singleton met Miss Agumbi online through Facebook two years ago. He flew out to Kenya on a tourist visa to spend time with her in person.

The British paper said Singleton's arrest came days after he messaged his younger brother Steven, 21, over Facebook to say he had extended his trip by a further six months and would be home in February.

"I thought he must be smitten to be flying out there to meet her. I'm just completely shocked by it all. I'm trying not to think about it," Steven said according to Daily Mail.
