Man arrested in Kunya with 74 rolls of bhang

A man has puzzled Kisumu Police after admitting to peddling bhang when he was found in Kunya with 74 rolls of the drug valued at Sh250,000.

Rashid Opondo, 37, was arrested yesterday while transporting the drugs to his market place and although he did not tell police where he conducts his business, he admitted to being the owner of the haul.

While at Kondele Police Station, where he was taken following his arrest pending court appearance, Opondo said peddling bhang is the only viable means of obtaining a living rather than stealing somebody's property.

BETTER EVIL

"I admit this bhang belongs to me and I was going to sell it, but I think I am better off than obtaining a living through stealing other peoples' property," he told police.

It is believed that Opondo is a notorious drug peddler who has been arrested several times only to be released on bond and go back to committing the same offence.

The man asked police to free him because his offence is much, "lighter than others like defilement".

Commenting on the arrest area assistant chief, Harrison Mogokwama, asked locals to cooperate with police in kicking the drug menace out of the lakeside region.

Mogokwama said community policing will put an end to drug abuse in the region.
