Two drown in Ewaso Nyiro River

Narok, Kenya: Two people yesterday drowned in Ewaso Nyiro River in Narok South sub-county.

Thirty-two-year-old Joseph Kiptanui drowned as he attempted to rescue a 13-year-old girl who had been washed downstream by the strong current.

According to Liner Korir, Mr Kiptanui's cousin, the girl had gone to wash clothes in the river before she decided to swim.

"The girl was overwhelmed by the strong water. Her friends screamed for help when they realised she had been overwhelmed and Kiptanui, who was passing by, jumped in to try and save her. Unfortunately, he too was swept away by the strong current," Korir said.

Narok South OCPD Philip Kipkirui said the girl's body had been retrieved but police are yet to recover Kiptanui's body.
