Administration Police officer gets life imprisonment for defiling 11-year old girl at IDP camp

Molo, Kenya: An Administration Police (AP) officer has been sentenced to life imprisonment by a Molo court for defiling an 11-year-old girl at an IDP camp.

The accused, Abdalla Njeru, appeared before Molo Senior Principal Magistrate Heston Nyaga and pleaded guilty to the charges.

The court heard that on October 13, 2013  at Gacharage IDP camp in Kuresoi, Nakuru County, Njeru defiled the girl instead of providing  security to her as assigned.

Leading prosecution Police Inspector Dominic Muteti told the court that the accused defiled the minor, who had gone for a short call at that night and threatened her of dire consequences if she dared report the incident to anybody.

The girl's mother, who testified in the case, said she noticed something was amiss with her daughter and upon interrogation, she told the court that she found that her daughter had been defiled.

The woman said the girl revealed that the police officer known as 'Abda' had done 'tabia mbaya' to her.

Her mother took her to hospital the following morning before she recorded a statement with the police at Molo Police Station leading to the arrest of the suspect.

Delivering the judgment, SPM Nyaga said that the medical report and the witness accounts before court proved beyond any reasonable doubt that the accused committed the offense, which is against sexual offenses Act of 2006.

The magistrate called for deterrent sentence for the accused noting with a lot of concern the rising cases of defilement.

He also gave out a resounding warning to those with similar intention that the law will take its full force on the culprits.

In mitigation, the accused asked for leniency from the court saying that he had a family that was dependent on him but the magistrate dismissed the plea saying that the society expected him to have led as a good example, noting that he was a government employee.
