Secret weapon for career success

Living

Whether starting a business or building your career, an advisory board is an essential tool that can reap many benefits if constituted properly, writes TANIA NGIMA

A few weeks ago, a friend and I were discussing advisory boards and the importance of putting one together for a project we are engaged in. We mapped out all the skill gaps we had and then looked around our social and professional networks to find like-minded people who believed in our cause.

Entrepreneurs are famous for building advisory boards, after all if you are bootstrapping your business – starting a business with little or no capital – then you need to incorporate people who can share wisdom on how to do it. But whether starting a business or building your career, having an advisory board is an essential tool and can reap enormous benefits if constituted the right way.

When

The perfect time to constitute an advisory board is as soon as you figure out which direction you want your career, business or a certain project to take. In any sphere of life, what we know is heavily outweighed by what we don’t know. Surrounding yourself with different and diverse individuals is one step towards closing that gap. Their knowledge and experiences help you navigate the various challenges that you will or are encountering. Your advisory board should evolve over time.

For example, say you formed an informal advisory board when you were changing careers. Your needs at the time were around making a successful transition and navigating the challenges of the new career. However, you are now settled in and looking to progress your expertise and accomplishments. This should prompt you into seeking counsel with people who are at the top of this field on how to position yourself, what skills to add to your repertoire.

Other areas

Advisory boards can work in almost every area of our lives, whether it is new and novel, or more routine. While with the existence of the Internet answers are virtually at our fingertips, building a go-to community of people enhances our experiences. Sharing and gaining expertise across different facets such as projects and businesses, raising families and major life changes contributes to a higher quality of life.
