PRAYING FOR THREE POINTS: Tusker keen on extending lead when they face Muhoroni Youth

Tusker will be seeking to go five points clear at the top of the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) standings when they host Muhoroni Youth today at Afraha Stadium from 2pm.

The brewers also begin a count-down towards their last six matches of the season, which will be a make or break affair as they hold on to their title ambitions.

Tusker are just two points ahead of Gor Mahia, who are second and cannot afford any slips-ups at this stage of the competition.

Team captain James Situma said they are not under any pressure, even as their position comes under constant threat.

“This is not the time for us to panic or allow ourselves to be under pressure because it might affect our concentration and make us commit unnecessary mistakes, which might prove costly at the end of the day,” he said.

“With six matches to go before the end of the season, we still have a lot of chances. Yes, we also know that other teams are also chasing the same title and they can also make mistakes. This is not the time to panic, but we must remain calm all the way.”

Situma admitted that it will not be easy, however, as there are teams that will be fighting relegation, while others will seek to finish in a respectable position after the final match of the season. With Gor Mahia breathing down their shoulders, the brewers will have to fight for every available points.

There is a possibility that Gor Mahia could take the lead, if they fail to win today and the KPL champions defeat Sofapaka on Sunday.

This weekend is the closet that Tusker, who have enjoyed a long stay at the top of the log, have ever come to letting go of their leadership.

The brewers will be hoping that a poor home record that has dodged them throughout the season does not come to haunt them. They have won only two of their last six home matches.

However, they have a good record against Muhoroni Youth; winning the last two of their five KPL meetings. Tusker won the first leg 2-1.

The brewers could never have hoped for a better time to have signed top striker Allan Wanga, who has scored in most of the matches he has featured.

He remains their biggest hope for goals this afternoon.

Muhoroni Youth have had a poor away record this season, with their best result being a 1-1 tie against Nairobi City Stars, but they are capable of rising to the Tusker challenge.

They will need to look back to last season’s 3-2 win they inflicted on the brewers at the same venue for some inspiration.
