BASKING IN NATIONAL GLORY: Nzoia Region claims Lion's share at national schools Term 2A games

St. Athony's Boys, Kitale celebrate after winning this year's U-16 national secondary schools football title

Sporting powerhouse Nzoia Region extended their dominance in national secondary schools Term 2A games that ended over the weekend at Kangaru School.

Nzoia had 60 points to emerge victorious, while their closest challenger Lake Region, was second, 10 points adrift. Mau Region completed the podium finish with 49 points.

Metropolitan had 46 points in fourth, while Aberdare (33), Coastal (26), hosts Highlands (24) and Northern had six points.

Nzoia stamped their authority in handball as St Luke's Kimilili and Moi Girls Kamusinga successfully defended their boys' and girls' titles. Their conquest earned Kimilili their record eighth title, while Kamusinga secured their fifth. However, the duo will have no time to celebrate as they agonise on how to win the East Africa titles. The fallen 2013 champions Kamusinga already know what awaits them at the regional games and have started working on it. Kimilili defeated Nairobi's Makongeni 23-12, while Kamusinga won 25-12 against Sega of Lake Region.

Kamusinga skipper Jacinta Leli said their main objective this year is to reclaim the East Africa title.

"Our performance has not been very good in the past two years, but we want to make amends and recapture the title. We are determined to make this happen and want to do it in style and snatch the trophy on home soil," Leli said.

Nzoia also dominated the Copa Coca-Cola under-16 football that was featuring for the first time in school games and is played by form one and two students. St Anthony's Kitale and Wiyeta were simply in a class of their own as they won the title without losing a match. In the final, St Anthony's defeated Aberdare's Wahundura 1-0, while Wiyeta routed Abwao of Lake 4-0 to be crowned champions.

St Anthony's bagged all the boys' individual awards with Philip Mayaka winning the most valuable player's award. Juma Bwire walked away with the golden boot, while Sheikh Aleeley bagged best goalkeeper award. The girls' awards were shared among the top three schools with Abwao's Tina Turner being named MVP, Jescah Sironya took the golden boot, while Olympics' Edith Ogindo was the best goalkeeper.

Metropolitan dominated rugby Sevens with ease. Laiser Hill were crowned champions, while Upper Hill were second. St Peter's Mumias joined the list of last year's champions, who failed to defend their honour, when they finished third. Upper Hill's Saidi Abdalla was named the tournament's MVP for his outstanding performance.

Mau overcame sustained challenge from Lake and Nzoia Regions to claim victory in athletics. Kaya Tiwi defeated former champions Obambo 26-24 to be crowned netball champions on their debut. Focus now shifts to the national Term 2B games to be held next month in Kisumu, before paving way for the East Africa games in Eldoret in August.
