After a four-day championships at Migori Teachers Training College, Mau was the region to beat as the games ended yesterday, when they garnered 255 points to successfully retain the title.
Known for their athletics prowess, they were really unmatched in numerous races. They knew what was expected of them and they delivered with minimal stress.
Nzoia Region were once again forced to play second fiddle. They could not withstand the pressure, their dominance in short races notwithstanding.
Mau team manager Musa Ewoi was delighted, saying his athletes achieved their goal.
"We accomplished our mission. Our main objective was to conquer and successfully defend our title and I am glad we achieved our purpose," Ewoi told FeverPitch.
Nzoia got 247 points in second spot, while Aberdare completed the podium finish with 110 points. Highlands had 101 points, hosts Lake (96), Metropolitan (92) and Coast (10).
However, Nzoia did not go home empty-handed as their women successfully defended their title.
Nzoia claimed victory with 140 points after their sprinters shone in their specialties. Nzoia reigned supreme in 100m hurdles as Cynthia Muliro won in a time of 16.91 seconds. Her Eregi counterpart Violet Barasa was second in 18.26, while Christine Nthenya of Tambach was third in 19.10.
They also ruled in 100m, 100m, 200m, 4×100m, 4×400m and 800m races.
Mau maintained their second spot in women's category with 124 points, while Metropolitan finished third with 66 points.
Mau's men led by captain Titus Kosgei had 131 points to lift the trophy. Nzoia were second with 107, while Highlands were third with 63.
