Sports CS Hassan Wario blames current office bearers on Harambee Stars failures

Sports Cabinet Secretary Hassan Wario has urged delegates to vote out the current Football Kenya Federation (FKF) officials during the December 14 elections to be held Kasarani.

Wario was speaking in Addis Ababa on Tuesday where he went to watch the national team Harambee Stars play Rwanda in the quarter-finals of the Council of East and Central Africa Football Association Senior Challenge Cup.

He said the current officials have failed to steer Harambee Stars to greater heights despite receiving plenty of support from the Government. Stars were bundled out after losing 5-3 to Rwanda on post-match penalties.

“The current officials have failed and the only thing for delegates to do is to vote them out. It is the only way we will have improvement in the national team Harambee Stars. We have always supported them and even paid the federation Sh3.5 million towards the regional tournament,” said Wario.

The Independent Electoral Board has in the meantime confirmed that national elections will be held in Nairobi.

The confirmation came three days after FKF boss Sam Nyamweya announced that the elections will be held in Kakamega.

Board Secretary Irene Tindi said the board had long settled on holding the polls in Nairobi.

“The board met on Tuesday and confirmed that the national elections will be held at Kasarani. It was always going to be held in Nairobi and the only thing we had told FKF is to give us the venue,” she said.

Tindi said the board was not aware of the announcement by Nyamweya moving the polls to Kakamega.

“We have not been informed and so we are not aware of the announcement,” she said even as she announced that sub branch polls will now be held tomorrow and not today as earlier planned. Tindi said the new date was necessitated by the need to give the Institute of Education in Democracy (IED) who will conduct the process time to prepare to carry out a credible exercise.

“We just met with them on Tuesday and it would be unfair to give them just one day to prepare. They have asked for two days and we obliged hence the decision to move the exercise to Friday,” she said.

The board will spend Sh8 million on the entire exercise. The IED is well known for observing elections and offering voter education in different parts of the world.

Elsewhere, Palos chairman Patrick Imbuga will vie for FKF Kisumu branch chairmanship.
