Chaotic fans, players must be punished

Strides made in addressing cases of hooliganism in football matches have been eroded.

The vice reared its ugly head after fans disrupted a match pitting AFC Leopards against Gor Mahia on Sunday. Perhaps such a high profile match needs more security measures but whatever happened should be condemned.

Hooliganism as a show of disaffection for match decisions is stone age. Fans should be made to understand that in a game there are only three outcomes: a win, a loss and a draw.

At times hooliganism after such matches has gone unpunished. Less than a week ago, Gor Mahia fans allegedly torched a Nairobi county government vehicle on their way from a match. AFC are said to have held officials hostage in several matches, forcing police to step in.

Talking is not enough to stop these acts. Action needs to be taken.

If the relevant authorities were keen enough, those captured on camera causing chaos, should be arrested to serve as an example to others who dare contemplate hooliganism.
