KING OF NYALI GOLF: Kingori wins Standard classic despite dropped bogey shots

Jimmy King’ori posted 39 stable ford points to emerge the overall winner of this year’s 6th edition of the ongoing Standard County Golf Classic tournament played at the par 71 Nyali Golf and Country Club course in Mombasa County on Saturday.

Despite dropping four mixed bogey shots in both nines, the handicap 10 King’ori rolled a total of 12 level pars and sank a rare birdie on the shortest par three-fifteenth hole to put him in the lead.

“I’m extremely excited at the victory after playing so hard at the tough championship course that had tricky pin positions,” said King’ori.

The Standard Group sponsored the day long tournament that attracted 150 golfers from the home club, Mombasa, Leisure, Vipingo, Malindi, guests and staff of the sponsor with valid handicap.

Willie Mbote playing off handicap 17 was the Men winner on 37 points while handicap 27 Suresh Hirani was the runners up on 36 points and taking the third slot was handicap 14 Aaron Kikuvi who was a point behind.

The club’s caddy Emmanuel Wekesa playing off handicap 4 was the gross winner after bringing home a five over par 76 gross.

The club’s former lady captain Alice Wahome playing off handicap 23 was the Lady winner on the day’s second excellent score of 38 points beating handicap 36 Gisele Dhanji to the runners up slot by a point difference.

National Golf team player Daniel Nduva from Nyali playing off handicap 1 won the Junior category on 33 points while his club mate handicap 5 Jeremy Wahome was the runners up on 34 points.

J.Maalu playing off handicap 13 was the Guest winner on 27 points and legislator Kanini Kega who had 23 points was the runners up.

Standard Group’s Photojournalist Mose Sammy from the Group’s Nyeri Bureau playing off handicap 27 was the Staff winner on 30 points.

Mose, who camped in Mombasa since last Thursday for the tourney was also the Nyali Club’s Friday Club nite winner.

He is set to represent the Standard Group in the on ongoing 16 days Tusker Malt 2015 Uganda open currently under way at the par 71 Kitante Golf course around the greeny Kitante Hill in Uganda.

Kenya Ports Authority and the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUT) Mombasa campus were awarded the prizes for the hidden hole one and two respectively.

Grace Gachoka and Allan Dainty were the Lady and Men winners of the longest drive respectively.

The tournament’s last year lady winner Hellen Weku playing off handicap 18 consoled herself with the nearest to Pin lady winner while the same for the Men was taken by Nyundo Katembo.

The tournament was graced by a member of Standard Group Board of Directors Shawn Zambuni, Managing Director Print and Operation Francis Munywoki, Finance Director Orlando Lyomu, Commercial Manager Regions Grace Kabis and Marketing Manager Nancy Wangui

Others were Group’s Team Leader North Rift Joseph Yego, Coast Team Leader Herman Mwachofi, Business Development Manager Regions Caroline Tuwei and several staffs from the Mombasa Bureau.
