Lawn tennis league unveiled in Kisumu

A lawn tennis league has been unveiled in Kisumu to promote the sport in the town and its environs.

While releasing this year’s calendar of events, Amani Na Upendo Development Group Director Collins Agwanda said the championship, the first ever in the area, would involve players between the ago of eight to 18 years old.

The Victoria Junior Tennis Championship first leg would run from April 1 to 30 in the lakeside town.

"The league would be played during school holidays starting from April because the majority of participants are students," said Agwanda.

Accompanied by the league’s co-ordinator Fanuel Omari, he added the organisation had launched tennis programmes in local schools to tap the young talent.

Millennium City junior Challenge that would be held between March 13 and 14 in Kisumu would be the first championship of the calendar.

Second leg

Other events include, Kisumu Junior Open Tennis Championship to be played on April 3 and 4.

Labour Day Junior Open (May 1st to 2nd), Madaraka Day Junior Open (May 29 and 30), Inter-Schools Tennis Open (June 19 and 20), Victoria Junior Tennis championship (July 30 to August 1). The second leg of the Champions League would be held on August 1 and 30.

Manyatta Junior Challenge will be held between September 3 and 5, Moi Day Open on October 9 and 11, with the final leg of the Champions League on November 20 and 21.

The final event in the year in the region, Nyanza Open Junior Championships, would be held between December 1 and 5.
