The ongoing KCSE examination has not leaked, according to a progress report seen by The Standard.

The Kenya National Examination Council (Knec) cautioned the public against fraudsters peddling fake questions. It raised questions over a report appearing in a section of the media describing it as "malicious".

"There is no way one question relayed via SMS can be described as a leakage," said Knec chief executive officer Paul Wasanga.

"If it is a leakage at the armoury, there would be circulation of an entire paper, which has not happened."

According to a brief on the ongoing exams, the council has questioned why the alleged leakage is in hand-written form, seems to originate from one place and consists of only one correct question.

Questions fake

The brief indicates that questions presented to Knec for verification by a journalist were confirmed to be fake, apart from two, which resembled the genuine paper. It says the fake questions are being sold for Sh7,000 to Sh10,000. Wasanga did not rule out possibility of sneaking through an examination question and relaying it through SMS a few hours before a paper is sat.

"Why is it that the leakage is being reported at Kahawa Wendani AP camp and not to the nearby Kahawa Sukari Police Station?" Wasanga wondered.

According to the brief, supervisors access papers as early as 6am daily hence, if a supervisor or invigilator is of low integrity, they can expose the content. Mr Wasanga said no examination question had been brought to the council for verification a day in advance.

Investigators have concluded unscrupulous supervisors, who tear the examination package and copy a few questions and relay them through mobile phones, are doing the handwritten documents.

According to the brief, the investigations have also ruled out that an entire paper has leaked. A corrupt Knec official, it was argued, would sell an entire paper, not a single question as is claimed in media reports.
