Defence committee seeks tighter security for Munyes

A parliamentary committee is expected to grill three Cabinet ministers over the ongoing Kenya Sudan border conflicts.

The row has seen Labour Minister John Munyes accused of espionage. The ministers summoned by the Defense and Foreign Relations Committee include, George Saitoti (Internal Security), Yusuf Haji (Defence) and Moses Wetang’ula (Foreign Affairs).

At the same time the committee headed by Wajir South MP Aden Keynan has asked the Government to beef Munyes’ security following allegations levelled against him.

Mark borders

Mr Keynan told The Standard after meeting Munyes at Parliament’s Continental House that the committee was appealing to the Government to mark its borders with Sudan to avoid conflicts. Munyes told The Standard when he left the meeting that he suspected the allegations could have emanated from Toposa militia aligned to the Khartoum government.

"The allegations are baseless and without truth," he added.

Munyes said a meeting between leaders from Turkana and Southern Sudan has been organised this weekend.
