Eldoret displaced persons release body of woman who ‘starved’ to death

Displaced people at the Eldoret Show Ground have finally released the body of a woman they claimed died of starvation.

The IDPs had hidden the body in an undisclosed tent vowing not to hand it over until the Government provides them with food.

But on Monday, they gave it to police after the officers threatened to abandon them after a frustrating search.

"We decided to let the police take the body because it would torment the little children left behind by the deceased," said Ndung’u Wanjohi, the IDPs’ spokesman.

They are now appealing to the Government to restore their daily food rations since children are becoming malnourished.

Meanwhile, more than 10,000 residents of Mbooni constituency have received food donated by Cabinet minister Mutula Kilonzo led Mwaki Foundation.

Foundation vice-chairman Mutula Kilonzo Jnr appealed for more donations to the area.

"Those facing hunger in Mbooni East and West are overwhelming, hence the need for increased relief food," he said.

He spoke to The Standard yesterday after receiving four tonnes of maize seed from Simlaw Seeds Company, to be distributed to farmers.

Separately, Holy Family Basilica youths donated food to the needy in Kaiti constituency.

The youth group chairman Jonathan Okwiri and the Organising Secretary Frank Mwangi said their members had washed cars to raise money to buy the food.

Mwangi said they were touched by the plight of the hungry in the region after KTN highlighted their story.
